Two Row on the Grand commemorates the Two Row Wampum Treaty of 1613, between the Haudenosaunee and Dutch colonists, which was the original peace treaty between indigenous and settler communities.  In 2013, the 400th anniversary of the treaty was commemorated by the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign Paddle from Albany to Manhattan, along the Hudson River in New York.   Ellie Joseph and Jay Bailey participated in this event and in 2016, they founded Two Row on the Grand.  Each year, a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people paddle the Grand River on a 10-day adventure, camping and eating together, and sharing traditional teachings, dancing, storytelling and sharing circles.  If you are interested in participating, click on the link above.

Water Cycles Expeditions has partnered with Two Row on the Grand, the University of Waterloo Faculty of the Environment and Six Nations Tourism to create Two Row by the Grand.  In 2026, local university students and members of Six Nations will complete a 10-day bicycle tour along the Grand River, honouring the Two Row Wampum and Silver Covenant Chain (treaties between the Haudenosaunee and British colonists, dating from 1676) “in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect’.  It is hoped this will become an annual event open to the public.  If you are interested in participating or supporting this endeavour, visit Two Row by the Grand.
